10 Somerset bakeries worth visiting

“With bread all sorrows are less”

The above quote was said by the character Sancho Panza in Don Quixote, and we couldn't agree more. The smell of freshly baked goods floating through the air is enough to make anyone's mouth water, so we thought we'd give you the run down of some of our favourite Somerset bakeries.

The Field Bakery, Bridgwater

Field Bakery was created by baker Rosy Benson, in collaboration with Fred Price, the farmer behind Gothelney Farm.

Field Bakery was started originally as a Workshop space to share Rosie's knowledge of sourdough baking and help connect more people to the farm. Workshops give participants a chance hear about interesting developments in the use of diverse regional grains, with their focus on future resilience. The Bakery is now open each Saturday morning from the farm, supplies the local Spaxton shop and runs a weekly Bread Club subscription model for locals and members in Bristol.

Market Bakery is a small artisan bakery based in the beautiful Somerset countryside. They specialise in sourdough bread made from local, traditionally milled organic flour, as well as classic French pastries.

In addition to their bakery and coffee offering, Market Bakery specialises in home-made, small-batch gelatos and sorbets with an ever-changing selection of flavours.

Ice-cream and cake... what could be better!?

Dough, Taunton

Dough is an Artisan bakery based in Bath Place in Somerset's County Town of Taunton. All of their breads are made using organic flour and are slow fermented to get the maximum flavour out of the dough.

As well as offering mouth-watering bakes to go, Dough also have a café where punters can sit and watch the world go by on Taunton's iconic 'Bath Place'.

Tom Hitchmough has been baking artisan bread at 'At the Chapel' in Bruton for the past twelve years. Tom and his team are passionate about quality bread and the joys of a wood-fired oven. They bake the long fermented traditional way, using stone-ground organic flour, water and salt, using a small amount of yeast in some breads and in others lots of seeds and fruit. Long fermentation creates a delicious flavour, increased nutritional content and a beautiful crust. Just like bread should be.

Additionally, they never use artificial flavourings, preservatives or stabilisers and all their packaging is both recyclable and bio-degradable.

A bakery in the truest sense, The Bakery at West Camel has existed as a traditional, handcrafted, bespoke bakery since 1912.

All of their products are made in-house by their team of highly skilled bakers, and if you've ever driven past, you'll know the iconic smell of freshly baked goods that draws people in from miles around!

Producing sweet pastries, fresh bread, custom orders and more, it's really worth a visit.

The Little Bakery, Langport

Whether you want to pre-order, or pop in and grab a quick bite to eat for breakfast or lunch, The Little Bakery offers a range of mouth-watering goodies, from pastries, pies, cakes, and savouries, all served in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

As well as their base in Station Road in Taunton, they attend a range of different foodie events across the region where they are known to sell out quickly.
