We are so lucky to have a selection of truly beautiful free parks and open spaces across the County of Somerset. To celebrate Somerset Day, we thought we'd share our favourites with you... however, we would definitely prefer it if you add them to your post-Covid-19 'Bucket List', instead of heading to them anytime soon!
Vivary Park, Taunton
Vivary Park can be found in the centre of Somerset’s County town of Taunton. Home to the iconic ‘Chelsea of the West’, Taunton Flower Show, the park covers 7.5 hectares of parkland.
In medieval times, the site was the fish farm or vivarium for the priory and castle, which is where the name ‘Vivary’ originated.
Nowadays, the park houses a large adventure play area, tennis courts, café, golf club and more, as well as stunning floral displays.
Alexandra Park, Bath
This 11-acre park sits on a wooded hillside rising from just beyond the river in Bath. With captivating views across the historic city, Alexandra Park is a wonderful, tranquil green space with mature trees.
Whether it’s to stroll, get a bird’s eye view of Bath, walk the dog, picnic, play boules or take advantage of the children’s playground, the park offers something for everyone.
Blenheim Gardens, Minehead
Not far from the town centre and seafront of Minehead, there is an unexpected haven of peace and tranquillity – the Blenheim Gardens.
This 6-acre park was created in the 1920's, and is now a mature, attractive and sheltered haven, popular with residents and visitors. The park provides spring and summer bedding displays, a wide range of trees, shrubs and perennials which thrive in the mild seaside climate.
Grove Park, Weston Super Mare
Grove Park is a beautiful park found just a short walk from Weston’s famous pier. The park also incorporates ‘Jill's Garden’, in memory of local TV presenter, Jill Dando.
The park is also home to a children’s play area, an attractive rock garden with several pools and the stunning Weston-Super-Mare Town Council headquarters built within the centre.
Royal Victoria Park, Bath
Just a short stroll from the city centre, the area is a beautiful expanse of green parkland, spanning 57 acres. Originally an arboretum, it is still home to beautiful botanic gardens and the Great Dell Aerial Walkway.
There are many attractions within the park, whatever your age. Gather your friends for a fun game of tennis or a round on the 18-hole mini golf course, or take the children to the expansive adventure playground. With climbing frames, zip lines and a skateboard area, it’s the perfect place to wear them out.
Wellington Park, Wellington
Wellington Park is a Grade II listed Edwardian formal park occupies 1.8 hectares and was restored to its former glory in 2000 with the aid of Heritage Lottery Funding.
Many of the original design features have been retained, and the park has a ha-ha, bandstand, ornamental pond and floral bedding displays.
Salthouse Fields, Clevedon
The Salthouse Fields in Clevedon are set in a fantastic location with woodland surroundings and picturesque sea views.
Not only this, but the Salthouse Fields are home to a skate park, extensive childrens play areas, tennis courts, a bowls club and Clevedons’ very own model railway – that runs round the field.
