Now we only have just over a week left of lockdown, before many of our shops and businesses are allowed to reopen. In the meantime, lockdown remains and so we have put together a handy list for anyone living within the Minehead area of our favourite things to do during this time, so have a peek below.
As always, please remember to keep your distance from others, wear a face covering when out and about, if you are able to, and make sure you remember to keep your hands clean.
1. Go for a walk on the beach
Minehead Bay is a sweeping sandy beach with small areas of pebbles and shingle and it makes for the perfect place for stroll on a wintery day. With dogs allowed on the beach from October to April, it makes the ideal place to blow away the cobwebs with your furry friend. Feeling peckish? Fish and chip shop, Dana's - a favourite with both locals and tourists alike, overlooks the seafront and will be sure to serve up an irresistible portion of fish and chips to warm you up.
2. Explore Blenheim Gardens
The beautiful Blenheim Gardens is located just a stone's throw from the town centre and covers nearly 2.5 hectares of parkland. Created in the 1920's it is now a mature, attractive and sheltered haven and provides the perfect place to relax, admire the colours of Autumn and take in the fresh air.
3. Get a takeaway treat box from Coaster Coffee
Coaster Coffee, found in The Avenue is family run business that offers a variety of delicious treats. As well as offering take away cream teas and cheese platters (YUM), Coaster Coffee are now offering customers a 'Treat Night Box', which, as you can probably imagine, sounds right up our street. They are just £12 with free delivery and come with Nutella, Biscoff & Belgian white chocolate dips as well as homemade flapjack and triple chocolate brownies, amongst other treats. Find out more and order, via their Facebook page.
4. Buy marshmallows to toast from Grown Up Marshmallows
Now this sounds like something we can definitely get on board with. Gourmet marshmallow company, Grown Up Marshmallows, found in The Avenue produce mallows that are naturally free from fat, egg, gluten and dairy products. They stock a range of products, from vegan treats to advent calendars, but their toasting kits particularly caught our eye. Is there anything cosier now the weather is colder than sitting at home eating a freshly toasted marshmallow? We think not. The best bit is they're available to buy online and you can get them delivered straight to your home.
5. Support the independents and buy some new clothes online
Ordinarily, Minehead has a thriving shopping area - filled with a number of small, independent retailers. Of course, over recent months the town has not seen the usual level of shoppers, so it is vital that the independent shops are supported. Many are offering online shopping experiences via their website, and the Minehead Business Improvement District has put together a handy website, showcasing the businesses within the area. Check it out at www.shopinminehead.co.uk.
6. Grab a coffee from Lisa’s Vintage Tea Room
We don't know about you, but we've found a real passion for coffee over the last few months. We seem to be drinking five times as much as normal, but hey, it's getting us through so it's all good. Lisa's Vintage Tea Room, found in The Avenue has been serving up takeaway food and drinks throughout lockdown, and we seriously recommend grabbing a coffee there. The team at Lisa's also use coffee by local roaster, DJ Miles & Co, so it's never been easier to fulfil your need for caffeine and support local businesses.
7. Get Fit with Channel Adventure
Channel Events, found in Warren Road, on the seafront in Minehead, offers an exciting range of adventurous activities, outdoor education, weekly clubs and personal development programmes. They have just launched their 'Get Out, Get Active' Advent Challenge, urging people to join in some free fitness fun throughout December. The challenge involves activities such as a sea swim and a 'Landmark Selfie', so even if you're not a die-hard fitness fanatic, there is plenty for you to enjoy. You can find out more details via their social media pages, but we think it's a fab initiative to help everyone keep active during what is usually a difficult month for fitness.
8. Treat yourself to some flowers from The Bloom Room
There is a quote by Corita Kent that we just love, and it is 'flowers grow out of dark moments'. For us, flowers have really helped put a smile on our faces over recent, difficult months, and The Bloom Room, found at Floyd's Corner remains open for your flower fix. Inspired by their beautiful Somerset countryside and seaside surroundings, The Bloom Room create exquisite arrangements bursting with colour and beauty. You can find out more via their website.
9. Climb North Hill
No visit to Minehead would be complete without scaling the heights of North Hill and seeing the Exmoor ponies. Enjoy far reaching views around Minehead bay, along the Exmoor heritage coastline and, on a clear day, across the water to Wales. Nothing is more magical than seeing the ponies in their natural habitat, peacefully grazing amongst the heather and gorse. Trust us - it's a must see!
10. Explore the Harbour
There has been a Harbour at Minehead since the late 1300′s and it is now has an active leisure boat community. It is also home to the well-respected pub/restaurant, The Old Ship Aground. The harbour is the perfect place to sit, relax and watch the world go by, with the sound of the boats gently bobbing on the sea. It is also a fantastic spot for crab-line fishing - a must for children and adults alike, if you visit Minehead.
