Top 10 Things to do in Taunton during lockdown!

With the next four weeks set to be spent in another national lockdown, we thought it would be handy to put together our guide of the top 10 things to do in some of our favourite Somerset towns and cities, kicking things off with the County town of Taunton for anyone living within the Taunton area.

Of course, if you are vulnerable, showing signs of being unwell or have any other reason why you should be self isolating then please ensure you do so. However, if you are able to stretch your legs or support some local businesses, then hopefully our handy guide will show you ways in which you can do this safely.

Vivary Park in Taunton
Vivary Park

1. Explore Vivary Park

The stunning Vivary Park is located close to the town centre and covers an impressive 7.5 hectares of parkland. It is a staggeringly beautiful surviving example of a late Victorian public park. With the iconic front gates and bandstand still standing proud, a walk around the park is the perfect way to stretch your legs.

2. Rent an e-scooter

The Department of Transport has recently approved Somerset West and Taunton Council for a 12-month e-scooter trial. Using the 'Zipp Mobility' app, you can locate the locations of the scooters across the district and use them at a cost of just 10p per minute. Of course, there are not many commuters or shoppers during this time, but we have discovered they are a particularly unique and fun way of getting around. So what are you waiting for!? Go and try them out. You can find out more here on their website.

3. Explore the Farmers Market

Although much of the retail offer has had to close it's doors until December, the Taunton Farmers Market is able to continue selling it's food and produce. Find the market in Taunton High Street on Thursdays where you can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, venison steaks, homemade chilli oil, the mouth scrumptious blueberry spelt muffins and much more.

4. Grab a takeaway coffee from Mr Miles

We were very relieved to learn that on of our favourite Independent coffee shops in the town will remain open on Thursdays and Saturdays for takeaway coffees. Using the highly regarded and local Tea Blenders and Coffee Roasters, DJ Miles Ltd, you're sure to get a delicious hot drink to keep you feeling warm and relaxed.

5. Order homemade goods from Taunton Country Market

If, like us, you're a sucker for a homemade treat or two, you have to try the Taunton Country Market. It is a cooperatively run shop, based in the beautiful Bath Place, selling a range of locally made produce. The really good news?! They have an online shop and offer delivery to TA1 and TA1 postcodes. Why not explore their goodies via their website.

6. Buy gifts online from the Taunton Independent Market

The amazing destination market that launched in Taunton in March had big plans for the winter, with a November edition having been planned for Sunday 8th, and two Christmas markets planned for December. However, due to the recent restrictions, the markets have had to be cancelled and so organiser, Michelle Beck, has launched an online shop perfect for anyone who wants to support a plethora of local businesses. Due to launch this week, you can check it out at www.tauntonmarket.co.uk.

7.  Head to BTP for a takeaway brunch

Boston Tea Party is open for takeaways and delivery! Yes, that's right! You can still enjoy their heavenly brunches and burgers from the comfort of your own home. Head to Uber Eats to place your order. We would seriously recommend the 'Boss Breakfast' or the 'Sweetcorn Hash'.

8. Get your 5-a-day from Granny Smiths

Is there anything more charming than a traditional greengrocers?! Granny Smiths, found in the Taunton Independent Quarter just oozes nostalgic charm and offers an abundance of juice fruit and tasty vegetables. They remain open Tuesday-Saturday, from 9am - 4pm and (bonus) they're also offering a click and collect service.

9. Walk along the canal

The Bridgwater & Taunton Canal skirts its way in splendid isolation around the base of the Quantock Hills for a little over 14 miles. It is the perfect place to lose yourself in a relaxing stroll whilst being surrounded by the beautiful scenery that Somerset boasts. Whether you want to walk or cycle, you're sure to enjoy this peaceful setting. Plot your route using the information here.

10. Treat yourself to an evening Tipple from The Little Wine Shop

The much-loved Little Wine Shop and Social in Taunton's Independent Quarter remains open during lockdown on Tuesday-Saturday between 10am and 5pm. They are also able to deliver, so whether you fancy trying a new gin, or are craving a cheese and wine night, you have to check them out.

Of course, there is a huge variety of other local businesses that are available throughout the lockdown, many of which have adapted their services in order to continue serving their loyal communities so please do remember to #ShopLocal and #SupportLocal wherever you can.

Most importantly - remember to stay safe.
