What is Point-to-Point, and should you go?

With the Summer fast approaching, we have entered the best time of year for Point-to-Point events. But what are they, and are they worth attending?

What is Point-to-Point?

A ‘Point-to-Point’ is a form of amateur horse racing over fences held at a variety of Point-to-Point racecourses throughout the UK. The events make for a great day out in the countryside where people come together to enjoy the sport and to socialise.

Most Point-to-Point meetings consist of at least six races. The start times vary depending upon the time of year and number of races, but courses usually open their gates at least two-hours before the first race, so you have plenty of time to grab a race card, study the form and enjoy your picnic before racing starts.

Placing Bets

There are normally two ways to place a bet at a Point-to-Point - with the Tote or a bookmaker. Both are usually located near the paddock (where the horses parade before each race). If you're unsure how to place a bet - just ask, and someone will help you out, and hopefully you might win some money!

It’s worth remembering that not many courses have facilities for card payments, so be sure to take enough cash to cover the cost of admission and a racecard, any bets you wish to place, and food and drink.

What else is there?

Most Point-to-Point courses have a bar, catering options and stalls to pick yourself up something nice. They are also a great opportunity to enjoy a picnic with friends, weather depending! Many courses have Trade Stands, whilst some even have a Country Fair running alongside the day. Entertainment for children is often provided in the shape of bouncy castles and fairground rides and they make a great day out for the whole family.

There's no dress code – so wear what you will! The season starts in November, but picks up in the Spring and finishes in mid-June - so a warm coat and wellies during the colder months are a must, whereas sun cream can be essential as we head into the warmer seasons.

Point to Points are also an ideal opportunity to spend a day in the countryside with your dog. Although please remember that dogs must always be on a lead, do not leave them in cars unattended, and make sure you clean up after them.
