Do you live in Wells, and you're stuck at home watching the clock for lockdown to end? Well, good news - not only do you live in a beautiful place, but there are so many independent and small businesses that are still operating across the city. We've put together a handy guide of our Top 10 things to do in Wells during lockdown, and hope you might find it helpful!
Of course, if you are feeling unwell or you are vulnerable then please stay at home. However, if you are able to get out and about, then please remember to support your local businesses as much as you can. When you are out and about, please continue wearing a face covering, sanitising your hands regularly and keeping your distance from others.
1. Wells Market
Wells Market Place is a focal point of the City with a twice weekly market on Wednesday and Saturday selling a plethora of local produce, crafts, gifts and so much more. Throughout the current lockdown, the Wells Market will remain open, operating between 9am and 2pm for essential supplies. Go and check it out!
2. Explore The Bishop's Palace
As the Medieval home of Bishops of Bath & Wells, surrounded by a moat and 14 acres of RHS partner gardens, The Bishop's Palace is a magical place to explore all year round. Hidden within the ancient ramparts and protected by the moat, 14 acres of stunning, tranquil gardens await you in the heart of the City and, along with the Chapel and takeaway cafe, they remain open throughout the November lockdown. 3. Order your Christmas Cards!
Scribbles, found in Wells High Street, is a family run independent greetings card, gifts and balloon shop. Of course, they have been forced to shut their doors due to the national lockdown, but (good news), they are offering a delivery, and collection service, so if you need any balloons, chocolates, cards or gifts then get in touch with them. 4. Grab a coffee from Strangers with Coffee
Great news! Strangers with Coffee is still on hand to give us our caffeine fix during this weird time. They are open Monday - Saturday between 8am-1pm and between 9am-1pm on Sundays. As if that wasn't enough, they also have the most mouth-watering selection of cakes and treats, from Bourbon and Nutella Flapjacks (YUM) to Biscoff cake.
5. Do a spot of festive shopping with Sage and Bumble
Home and gift boutique, Sage and Bumble can be found at 38 Market Street Courtyard. Of course, like many others, they are currently closed for 'lockdown #2', but the fabulous news is that you are still able to support them via their website. Whether you fancy picking up some festive bits to give your home a bit of sparkle or are looking to feel inspired for your Christmas gift list, they have a whole host of lovely things available online.
6. Stop and smell the Rosé at The Grape and the Good
We love a good wine pun, and subsequently we also love a good wine - so what better place than Independent wine shop, The Grape and the Good?! Found at 29 Broad Street, the shop remains open throughout lockdown, and is also offering a delivery service. With that good news, we're feeling on cloud wine. Ha! See what we did there. 7. Treat yourself at Goldfinch Floral Studio
According to Jennifer Owen at Goldfinch Floral Studio, they sell 'Out of the Ordinary Flowers for Out of the Ordinary Folk', and honestly, their designs are beaaauuutiful. Why not give yourself a little self-love during this horrid time and treat yourself to something from Goldfinch. 8. 'Go Fudge Yourself'
No, we aren't being rude... 'Go Fudge Yourself' is a fudge and cake maker based in beautiful Wells and trust us, you're going to want to try their goods. From traditional flavours, to the whackier (like Jägerbomb) there is something for everyone and what's even better? You can shop online!
9. Get inspired by Wells Cathedral
Built between 1175 and 1490, Wells Cathedral has been described as “the most poetic of the English Cathedrals”. Although currently closed (except for individual prayer, lighting of candles and quiet reflection), Wells Cathedral makes a mighty magical place to sit and reflect. Of course, from here you also need to take a stroll up to the truly 'Instagrammable' Vicar's Close. It is truly stunning, and a walk around the Cathedral green is sure to give everyone a well-deserved 'pick-me-up'.
10. Fill your tummy with food from Rugantino
Rugantino Restaurant is a favourite with many across the city and beyond. A family-run restaurant, Francesco Rossi started Rugantinos restaurant in Wells 40 years ago, and today it is run by his two sons, Jon and Nick, who continue to offer a delicious menu of classic, homemade Italian cuisine. They are currently offering takeaway services and you can see what's on offer via their website.
BONUS
It might not be in lockdown (well, technically it is but only just), but we couldn't not mention the St Thomas Street Advent Windows event that will be taking place from 1st December. Each evening, from Tuesday 1st, new windows will be illuminated at 5pm in St Thomas St, Wells, Somerset, until Christmas Eve when all the windows will be lit. It's a must-see!
